The Best Cure for Self Doubt No One Talks About

06.16.23 | Lisa Michelle | No Comments

I saw something on TikTok earlier this week that gave me a good chuckle. If you can’t watch it at the moment, I’ve included the transcript below. Important to note, this story was shared by the one and only Jennifer Coolidge, so watch it if you can!

“This is going to be something that I might regret saying, but I think one of the best things to cure self doubt is just to go to really bad stuff. I’m talking about plays you hear that are terrible. Go to them. There’s shows on television that are terrible. Watch them.

I’ll tell you how I got this idea. I was in college and I just hated myself and was so full of self doubt. And I went to this terrible production of Oliver and it was just, Oliver! Oliver! I mean everyone was bad, everyone, the whole show.

I mean, it was ike the seas had parted. I felt like I had a chance in this world!

Not the good stuff! The good stuff is just intimidating and you’re like, how could I ever fucking do that.”

How funny and helpful is this advice? The next time you’re feeling an inkling of self doubt, do as Jennifer Coolidge says and watch the bad tv. No matter what profession you’re in, there’s a very good chance that someone very mediocre is out there doing what you want to do and making it work. So if they can do it, you can too! 😜

Hope you enjoyed this lighter tale of wisdom.
